Original abstract

Construction Hazard Prevention through Design (CHPtD) is a proactive safety approach aimed at mitigating workplace injuries by integrating hazard recognition into the design phase of construction projects. Despite its benefits, effective implementation remains hindered due to insufficient hazard recognition skills among design professionals. With the recent advancements of digital video-based platforms such as YouTube and Generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT, this study comparatively assesses the effectiveness of these two platforms in enhancing hazard recognition during simulated CHPtD activities. Utilizing a randomized controlled experimental design, senior-level civil engineering students were assigned with hazard recognition tasks involving three common construction scenarios: rooftop skylight installation, structural steel girder installation, and interior upper-level drywall installation. Results indicate a significant improvement in hazard identification for both interventions compared to the control group. Participants leveraging ChatGPT demonstrated marginally better performance relative to the participants who used YouTube. These findings provide practical insights for the construction industry by identifying scalable, low-cost digital tools that can be integrated into design reviews to improve hazard recognition and support safer project outcomes. The study concludes that both YouTube and ChatGPT offer considerable value in enhancing CHPtD, with ChatGPT presenting slight advantages.
