Original abstract

Supporting patients with chronic diseases in maintaining strict health regimes can be challenging.Patient adherence can be particularly complicated where the disease is silent, causing no immediate symptoms.Digital outreach tools, such as AI-based apps, can potentially act as a cost-effective treatment tool due to their scalability. To date, however, such apps have been data-driven, relying on large language models to individualise approaches for users.Given mixed recorded adherence rates, these tools need better design. To sustain use, we propose applying and testing how the Functional Theory of Attitude and Appraisal Theory align with the design of such apps' outputs to improve uptake and patient adherence. These Information Systems theories can explain differences in individual sentiments and thinking styles, as well as provide ways to appraise information and express personal attitudes. This theory-based approach may result in greater uptake and effective use.
