Original abstract

While industry-academic collaboration has always been challenging, the current environment introduces new and intensifying pressures. Rapid career turnover among industry partners makes sustaining long-term relationships difficult, while organisations increasingly expect quick, tangible outcomes. At the same time, global dynamics shape research priorities and funding, placing noticeable pressures on areas such as inclusion and diversity. Academic incentives further complicate collaboration as top-tier journals often prioritise theoretical over practical contributions. The rapid rise of generative AI adds both opportunity and instability to partnership building. This panel addresses two key challenges: how to establish and sustain meaningful collaborations among academia, industry, and policymakers in a fast-changing context, and how to translate these collaborations into outputs that are both academically rigorous and relevant to practice.
