Original abstract

This chapter focuses on nature as a key concept in cultural geography. We begin by showing how cultural geography addresses the ontological, epistemological, ethical, and political dimensions of nature – dimensions which cannot be addressed through physical science alone. The following section explores how nature as an idea is shaped by the aesthetic preferences, meanings, and values associated with cultural context. To illustrate this, we ask ChatGPT to visualise nature, and we critically analyse its output from a cultural geography perspective. The next section examines how cultural geographers have sought to enlarge their engagement with nature beyond the limits of social constructionist approaches by attending to the natures within culture itself. Here, we turn to Singapore’s biophilic architecture to spotlight the contemporary significance of these more recent innovations in cultural geography. The final part of the chapter explores how cultural geography approaches have been applied to the topic of human nature. We show how, for many cultural geographers, the category of ‘the human’ is not the rigid, unchanging thing we often take it to be. For this reason, the work of cultural geographers has important implications for how we think about and respond to the environmental issues associated with life in the Anthropocene.
