Original abstract

Turing launched the artificial intelligence (AI) project with his classic 1950 paper on “Computing Machinery and Intelligence.” In this paper, he proposes the famous imitation game and conjectures that it will be possible to program computers to play this game successfully in about 50 years’ time. He mentions ( 1950 , p. 452) “a sonnet-writing machine” and gives an imaginary dialogue by which such a machine might defend the quality of its sonnet. These specific predictions have been largely confirmed by ChatGPT, which was released on 30 November 2022. ChatGPT does not play the imitation game in the particular form in which Turing describes it, but, in a general sense, it does indeed imitate humans by producing the kind of answers to questions which knowledgeable humans would produce. Using ChatGPT or some other large language model, it has become possible to conduct long and complicated conversations with an AI program on almost any topic. Perhaps these conversations do not correspond exactly to Turing’s original definition of the imitation game, but they are sufficiently similar for us to say that his prediction was remarkably accurate, and that it took about 72 years, rather than about 50 years, to be fulfilled.
