Original abstract

The preservation and contemporary reinterpretation of cultural heritage require the transfer of historical motifs into contemporary design processes. This study aimed to develop contemporary textile surface designs based on the floral ornaments of the Alâeddin Mosque in Konya. The study employed document analysis and visual analysis within a qualitative research design. 12 floral motifs selected through purposive sampling were digitised using Autodesk AutoCAD and Procreate, and their formal characteristics were analysed and reinterpreted. The resulting textile surface designs were applied to curtain panels, bedding sets, decorative cushions, runners, and wall hangings. ChatGPT was used exclusively for product visualization, whereas all design decisions were made by the researcher. The findings showed that the motifs could be adapted to different surface arrangements through repetition, rhythm, symmetry, and modular composition. Border motifs were more suitable for linear surfaces, whereas centrally composed motifs were better suited to products with a focal function. Digital reinterpretation enabled the development of new surface compositions, while AI-assisted visualisation supported product-scale evaluation of the designs. The study makes a methodological contribution to cultural heritage-based textile design research by proposing a systematic design process integrating digitisation, formal analysis, reinterpretation, surface design, and AI-assisted product visualisation of historical architectural motifs. Keywords: Turkish art, Cultural heritage, Alâeddin Mosque, Floral ornamentation, Textile surface design, Artificial intelligence-assisted design.
