Original abstract

While phishing remains a persistent threat, the emergence of multimodal Large Language Models, such as OpenAI's GPT-5, has fundamentally altered the voice phishing (vishing) landscape. This research explores the arms race between automated AI-driven social engineering and human-centered detection. We have developed web-based autonomous vishing software capable of conducting real-time deceptive conversations. As the technical architecture is complete, the project is currently navigating the ethical review process in preparation for human-subject testing. The core objective is to evaluate how users interact with and potentially detect AI-synthesized voices in a controlled environment.By presenting in the TREO Emerging Ideas track, we seek to engage the IS community on two fronts: (1) refining experimental methodologies for testing live AI deception without compromising ethical boundaries, and (2) feedback on preparing for the next stage in research which will involve a Design Science study with the software artifact within an organization.
